The bipartisan duo of Senators Thom Tillis of North Carolina and Chris Coons of Delaware, cautioned Americans to be aware of the legal means China is using to surpass the U.S. rather than focusing exclusively on illegal research and innovation theft, although that remains very much a problem.
At a subcommittee meeting of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Senator Tillis said, “Beyond theft, the significant concern for all of us here today should be the CCP overtaking the United States in domestic innovation rather than a current reliance on theft, using past theft to become a competitor head to head.”
Senator Tillias stated that some U.S. allies in industries like pharmaceuticals and biotech research are also undermining U.S. intellectual property rights, but China remains the major threat.
Senator Coons said, “China has manipulated standard-setting boards and flooded the USPTO [Patent Office] with trademark and patent applications to slow down all of its work.”
