Mexican “plaza boss” Avila was a core official under “El Chapo”.
On Tuesday, the Department of Justice announced that a high-ranking member of El Chapo’s drug cartel made his first appearance in the D.C. District Court to face international drug trafficking charges. Jorge Ivan Gastelum Avila served as both an assassin and “plaza boss” for the Sinaloa Cartel between 2009 and 2016, overseeing the manufacturing and distribution of cocaine and marijuana from the cartel’s headquarters in Mexico.
El Chapo’s real name is Joaquin Guznam Loera, and both he and Avila were originally arrested in 2016 by Mexican authorities. The Justice Department requested their provisional arrest on international drug trafficking charges in February 2020, and Avila was extradited from Mexico to the United States on April 1. Avila is being charged with “conspiracy to manufacture and distribute five kilograms or more of cocaine and over 1,000 kilograms of marijuana” and with the use of a firearm in relation to a drug trafficking crime.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- That this court proceeding goes smoothly for its entire duration.
- That those transporting Avila are kept safe as they keep Avila safe.
- For the Justice Department as they ensure this person faces necessary consequences for his actions.
