The Food and Drug Administration has a process for approving or recalling a drug in the marketplace. Their authority has been challenged in federal court with respect to the agency’s approval of a widely used abortion pill.
A hearing on the case was held this week, and the judge said he is poised to rule “as soon as possible” on the suspension of the FDA’s approval and reversal of the agency’s drug regulatory authority.
The plaintiffs have said that the abortion pills, which are available through U.S. Postal Service delivery, provide an unsafe “do-it-yourself” pregnancy termination, which can be harmful to women and available to be used indiscriminately by sex traffickers, for example.
The Justice Department’s associate attorney general said taking the drug from the marketplace “would work severe harm to all who rely on the medication.”
