Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness. – Matthew 6:33
On this date in 1820, President James Monroe signed the Missouri Compromise into law. This legislation temporarily eased the tensions between slave states and free states by permitting Missouri to enter the Union as a slave state but prohibited slavery in all other states north of the 36°30′ parallel. While the Missouri Compromise may have temporarily resolved the issue, it failed to address the underlying humanitarian problems inherent in the enslavement of those of African descent. Today, you may face multiple complicated issues as a believer in the midst of a culture in conflict. Pray for wisdom as you seek God’s will and purpose for your life and witness. Ask that He would use you as His instrument to bring peace and reconciliation in your part of this often troubled world.
As the Lord leads, pray with us…
- For the president and his advisors as they pursue diversity and equity in their agenda for the nation.
- For U.S. governing officials at the federal, state, and local levels as they face the cultural divides.
