In the News…
Gene Dodaro, the Comptroller General of the U.S. and head of the Government Accountability Office, said he was unable to render an opinion on how reliable the government’s consolidated financial statements are ahead of the looming debt crisis.
Domestic and international challenges being faced by the U.S. along with climate issues, aid for Ukraine and immigration matters keep him from rendering an opinion.
He stated, “It’s essential that the federal government has complete and accurate financial information, both across the government and within each agency, to operate as effectively and efficiently as possible. While the federal government has made significant strides in improving its financial management, this year’s audit report emphasizes the need for the government to address these serious financial management weaknesses and for Congress to develop a plan to put the government on a path toward long-term fiscal sustainability.”
He places some responsibility on the Departments of Defense and Education and on the Small Business Administration, also saying there is a lack of accounting for inter-agency transactions.
With America’s debt growing faster than its revenues, current policies are “unsustainable,” his report said.
