The northern tip of New York is the most active.
While House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and other members of Congress prepare for a visit to the U.S.-Mexico border, U.S. Border Patrol officials along the U.S.-Canada border say illegal crossings are running at “historic levels.”
“As we progress deeper into winter and continue to address the ongoing pace of illicit cross-border traffic, the level of concern for the lives and welfare of our Border Patrol Agents and those we are encountering — particularly vulnerable populations — continues to climb,” said Robert Garcia, chief patrol agent in the Swanton sector.
Illegal crossings in that sector since October 1, 2022, exceeds 1,500, more than in all of last year. While many of the immigrants are Canadians, U.S. Customs and Border Protection reports as many as 700 migrants from China, roughly the same from Mexico, with those coming from the Philippines, Brazil, and Columbia having high numbers also.
