For I desire steadfast love and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings. – Hosea 6:6
A millwright in California discovered gold along the banks of Sutter’s Creek on this day in 1848. This creek was named after a Swiss immigrant who came to Mexican California in 1839 and won a grant of nearly 50,000 acres of land. Following the American victory in 1847 in the war against Mexico, Sutter’s land fell within U.S. borders. He hired the millwright to build a sawmill along the American River in 1848. Sutter tried to keep the millwright’s discovery of gold a secret, but word soon spread. The California gold rush had begun, forever changing the course of history in the Western region of the U.S. Looking back at America’s history, take a moment to ponder how God has used the many events that have shaped this nation. Pray that those in authority would seek His will as they serve in public office.
As the Lord leads, pray with us…
- For the director and personnel of the Bureau of Land Management as they engage in conservation efforts.
- For officials in the Department of the Interior as they work with tribal communities to steward national lands.
