Just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, so we speak not to please man, but to please God who tests our hearts. – 1 Thessalonians 2:4

Today’s verse serves as an encouragement and opportunity for you to reflect on whom you try to please with your words. Paul shares earlier instances in his ministry when he experienced persecution for the message he was preaching on his missionary journeys. His goal was not to say things that would win human approval but to align with the ways of God. The way of God is love–full of patience, kindness, goodness, and faithfulness. Unfortunately, the political landscape can often tempt you away from God’s love, drawing you toward anger, contention, or scorn. As you consider this passage today, ask that God would reveal ways in your life to extend His heart of love to others. Intercede on behalf of judges and justices in the judicial branch of government, that they would be faithful to uphold the Constitution rather than seek societal approval.

As the Lord leads, pray with us…

  • For Supreme Court justices to abide by the oath they swore to uphold the laws and Constitution of the United States.
  • For members of Congress, both incumbents and the incoming freshman, to conduct themselves and their legislative business with integrity and honesty.
