U.S. responds to Iran’s execution of human rights protestors.
The Department of the Treasury has placed sanctions on Iran’s Prosecutor General along with multiple military officials and the manufacturers of Iran’s anti-riot equipment. Nationwide protests against Iran’s violations of human rights and free speech have continued for many months now, but the government’s violence toward these protestors has escalated in recent weeks. One protestor was publicly executed, one privately executed, and several have been sentenced to death by Iran’s Prosecutor General for their dissidence.
“We denounce the Iranian regime’s intensifying use of violence against its own people who are advocating for their human rights,” said Under Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Brian Nelson. “The United States and our partners are dedicated to holding Iranian officials to account for egregious abuses committed against Iranian citizens fighting for their fundamental freedoms.”
