The legislation would let Puerto Ricans determine their political future.
The House of Representatives has passed a bill that would allow citizens of Puerto Rico to choose how their territory will proceed politically in the future. The legislation makes it possible for Puerto Rico to apply for statehood or become an independent country.
The vote in the House may end up being symbolic since the measure is not expected to pass in the Senate, where support is likely to fall short of the 60 votes that would overcome the filibuster.
The White House released a statement that said, “The president calls on Congress to act swiftly to put the future of Puerto Rico’s political status in the hands of Puerto Ricans, where it belongs.”
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For wisdom for members of Congress as they finish out the last weeks of the current term.
- For senators as they consider the bill to decolonize Puerto Rico.
