The sum of your word is truth, and every one of your righteous rules endures forever. – Psalm 119:160
What makes a great leader? America’s first president knew the success of a nation does not rest solely upon leadership but also upon a heart bowed before God. George Washington said, “It is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly implore His protection and favor.”
While the mechanics of leadership can be learned, the heart of a truly great leader must be cultivated. King Solomon, an early ruler in ancient Israel, noted how leadership effects those under its reign. “When the wicked rise, people hide themselves, but when they perish the righteous increase” (Proverbs 28:28).
Seasons of poor leadership happen in companies, nations, churches, and families. God knows people suffer under the reign of the wicked and, while He may allow it for a time, there is a day when all accounts will be settled. “I will punish the world for its evil, and the wicked for their iniquity, I will put an end to the pomp of the arrogant and lay low the pompous pride of the ruthless” (Isaiah 13:11).
As a follower of Christ, you crave God’s goodness and long to live under His righteous rule. That day will come! Until then, you are called to make “supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings… for all people, kings and all who are in high positions” (1 Timothy 2:1-2). Today, ask God to raise up leaders in America and in the world that honor Him and seek His ways, so people may freely worship Him and share His gospel.

14 For here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city that is to come. 15 Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name. 16 Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.
17 Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you.
18 Pray for us, for we are sure that we have a clear conscience, desiring to act honorably in all things.
