What Do You Say?

If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s religion is worthless.  – James 1:26

Have you ever had some unwanted words pop out when talking to someone? You might begin to backpedal saying, “That’s not what I meant to say.” James 1:27 describes true religion, “To visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.” But in the verse before, today’s verse, James also says that those who have true religion have control over what they say. An unbridled tongue may show up in many different ways, such as swearing, lying, words that wound, or gossip.

Proverbs 15:1 shows the importance of a soft answer over harsh words. Paul says to use words to build each other up (Ephesians 4:29). While James 3:8 states, “No human being can tame the tongue,” God can do all things. As you yield your heart to the Lord, He will fill you with love, encouragement, and forgiveness so that you overflow. Jesus said, “The good person out of his good treasure brings forth good,” (Matthew 12:35). And it is often wise to simply keep your mouth closed (Proverbs 17:28).

Your mouth is like a spigot. Whatever is inside, comes out. A heart yielded to the Spirit of the Lord will speak words of kindness, encouragement, and gentle correction with a pure heart. Meditate on His Word and His love. Ask the Lord to guide your speech.

As you have opportunities to engage in political conversation, seek God’s heart to speak His truth in love. The Lord, at times, speaks stern words to those who are not following His will. However, His correction is done out of love and a desire for redemption. Pray for Christians to shine like lights in this nation, especially when responding to people who disagree with them.

33 “Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree bad and its fruit bad, for the tree is known by its fruit. 34 You brood of vipers! How can you speak good, when you are evil? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. 35 The good person out of his good treasure brings forth good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure brings forth evil. 36 I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, 37 for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”
