What Are You Planting?

Do not be deceived. God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap.  – Galatians 6:7

No one who plants tomatoes would expect to go out and pick corn off the vine. The things you do begin in your thought life. Often, people make decisions, giving no thought to what it will look like when they are carried out. When a decision is impulsive, based on feelings or desires, the damage can be great.

There is tremendous clamor and dissonance in our nation today. Consider how indulging critical and judgmental thoughts can turn into expressions in words and behaviors. Sowing seeds of discord and division results in contention or loss of relationship. Today’s verse is clear regarding the return on your “investment.” Have you given thought lately to what you are planting in your daily life?

Paul’s advice, in Philippians 4:8 to think about good things and in Colossians 3:2 to think on eternal things, will help you to make decisions that are sound and godly, that prevent heartache and enhance life. The Heavenly Father also corrects His children. If you go astray, you can count on the Lord to show you where you’ve gone wrong. Sometimes correction is painful, but it is always good and done in love, as loving parents discipline their children to keep them from harm.

In prayer today, fill your mind with Bible promises concerning answered prayer, such as John 15:7, “If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.” Intercede for this nation today, sowing prayers of peace, truth, and salvation, in the precious name of Jesus.

11 But as for you, O man of God, flee these things. Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness. 12 Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called and about which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. 13 I charge you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who in his testimony before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, 14 to keep the commandment unstained and free from reproach until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 which he will display at the proper time—he who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16 who alone has immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see. To him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen.

17 As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. 18 They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, 19 thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.
