Today, President Joe Biden will take part in a bilateral call with China’s President Xi Jinping from the White House. According to Coordinator for Strategic Communications at the National Security Council John Kirby, the president is expected to discuss a range of issues, but the primary focus of the call is to maintain an ongoing dialogue with President Xi.
“This is the kind of relationship-tending that President Biden believes strongly in doing even with nations with which you might have significant differences,” Coordinator Kirby said, “There’s importance and value in keeping the lines of communication open.” While the U.S. and China remain at odds over Russia’s conflict in Ukraine, China’s aggressive actions in the South China Sea, Taiwan’s sovereignty, trade disagreements, human rights abuses, and COVID-19 response, Coordinator Kirby clarified the president is looking to deescalate the tensions between the two nations and keep diplomatic channels open. He added that there would be a further update after the call.
