Human Nature

The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.  – James 5:16

Scripture is very good at reminding its readers that God’s saints and prophets are people “with a nature like ours.” One example of this is in James 5:17-18. What does this mean? The way biological children resemble their parents, you were created to resemble your Father, God. For example, in the capacity of rationality and spirituality, you are superior to all other creatures on Earth. Also, you, like God, can function in a communal covenant of love. However, sin has marred your likeness to your Father. It breaks the righteous and holy communion causing you to be subject to all the ills of dying flesh. You do not have to work on “being human,” it is your nature to sin.

Through Jesus Christ, the roadblocks to your identity in the image of God have been set right. While your nature remains mortal flesh, when redeemed in Christ, God’s human children are infused with His Spirit! When you speak life and hope into a desperate world in the name of Christ, miracles happen!

Yes, modern saints of God are in nature like all flesh but, through Jesus Christ, you can be confident your prayers make a difference to the nation and in the world. God assigned you this specific place in history to participate with Him in His purposes for humankind. Pray fervently today for God’s mercy to be poured out upon America. Ask for the hope of Christ to be revealed in the places of greatest darkness, bringing salvation and transformation to those in need, glorifying God’s good name.

Today’s Verse: James 5:16

Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.

Come, O children, listen to me;
    I will teach you the fear of the Lord.
12 What man is there who desires life
    and loves many days, that he may see good?
13 Keep your tongue from evil
    and your lips from speaking deceit.
14 Turn away from evil and do good;
    seek peace and pursue it.

15 The eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous
    and his ears toward their cry.
16 The face of the Lord is against those who do evil,
    to cut off the memory of them from the earth.
17 When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears
    and delivers them out of all their troubles.
18 The Lord is near to the brokenhearted
    and saves the crushed in spirit.

19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous,
    but the Lord delivers him out of them all.
20 He keeps all his bones;
    not one of them is broken.
21 Affliction will slay the wicked,
    and those who hate the righteous will be condemned.
22 The Lord redeems the life of his servants;
    none of those who take refuge in him will be condemned.
