The Three-Fold Cord

The Lord is the stronghold of my life. – Psalm 27:1

As God prepared to move His chosen people out of Egypt, darkness hung as a plague in judgment on that nation. As a pillar of fire, God led the way for the Israelites as they fled Egypt. He was their light!

King David proclaimed that the Lord was his light, his salvation, and his stronghold. Charles Spurgeon described it as “a threefold cord which could not be broken.” As light, God exposes the darkness of sin so that a relationship with Him can be true and holy. As salvation, He will cover you with love and transform you from within. As your stronghold, He will protect you and give you joy to meet the challenges of life.

David’s questions in Psalm 27:1 are relevant for today: “Whom shall I fear… of whom shall I be afraid?” For many around the world, these are perilous times. But Christ conquered Satan and overcame the power of death. Donald M. Williams wrote in his commentary:
“Faith or fear – these are our ultimate options. Either we can know the living God as our ‘light,’ ‘salvation,’ and ‘strength,’ or we are condemned to anguish as we move toward our final hour. The atheist philosopher Bertrand Russell put it, ‘The older I get, the more nervous I become.’ In contrast, two weeks before his death, Pope John XXIII said, ‘My bags are packed. I’m ready to go.’”

Praise God that you can place your faith in Him as your light, your salvation, and your stronghold today. Then pray that this nation and its governing officials will choose the same. No matter the condition of the world around you, God is in control. Keep your eyes on Him. He will be your stronghold.

Today’s Verse: Psalm 27:1

The Lord is my light and my salvation;
    whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life;
    of whom shall I be afraid?

I love you, O Lord, my strength.
The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer,
    my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge,
    my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised,
    and I am saved from my enemies.

27 For you save a humble people,
    but the haughty eyes you bring down.
28 For it is you who light my lamp;
    the Lord my God lightens my darkness.
29 For by you I can run against a troop,
    and by my God I can leap over a wall.
30 This God—his way is perfect;
    the word of the Lord proves true;
    he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him.

31 For who is God, but the Lord?
    And who is a rock, except our God?—
32 the God who equipped me with strength
    and made my way blameless.
