Writes letter to colleagues in response to Justice Thomas’ references to landmark rulings.
Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi of California on Monday said she is preparing votes on a number of bills protecting abortion as well as codifying other landmark Supreme Court decisions.
In a “Dear Colleague” letter to her caucus, Speaker Pelosi referenced bills to respond to Justice Clarence Thomas’ concurring opinion in the recently decided Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, where he called for the Court to revisit landmark rulings protecting same-sex relationships, marriage equality, and access to contraceptives. Her actions are largely in reaction to those who are calling for action from federal legislators.
Speaker Pelosi wrote, “Legislation is being introduced to further codify freedoms which Americans currently enjoy. More information to follow.” Much of the legislation would likely to fail in the Senate, where 60 votes are needed to bypass the filibuster. In her letter, she called for votes to “eliminate the filibuster so that we can restore women’s fundamental rights—and freedom for every American.”
