Secure in God

They should set their hope on God and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments.  – Psalm 78:7

Today’s verse gives believers three things to do and to teach future generations. First, set your hope on God. In God, through Christ, the believer has security, not only eternally, but in this life as well. Jesus taught His disciples to pray for their daily needs. He told His followers not to worry but to make God their top priority. When that happens, physical needs will be met. In Him, all needs are met: physical, spiritual, and emotional, to those who ask.

Second, remember God’s works. God has done mighty things through the ages: created heaven and earth, raised up the nation of Israel and led them to the promised land, sent His Son, through the virgin Mary, to die for the sin of humankind, and resurrected Him, with the promise of eternal life to believers. He also does smaller works in daily life. When He answers your prayers, rescues you from trouble, or speaks to you in a special way, it is good to remember those situations to build your faith and the faith of others.

Third, keep His commandments. Jesus said, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent” (John 6:29). Remember that Jesus is Lord as well as Savior. He said, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments” (John 14:15). He taught that the two greatest commandments are to love God and love others (Matthew 22:37-39). As you seek the Lord in your prayer time today, determine to hope in God, remember His works and keep His commandments. Pray for peace in the nation and for a great revival in the land.

25 “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27 And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? 28 And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, 29 yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31 Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

34 “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
