Power, Purpose, and Presence

Let your steadfast love, O Lord, be upon us, even as we hope in you. – Psalm 33:22

The Lord showed His power to Israel in their escape from Egypt. He did so again as they walked on dry land between the divided waters of the Red Sea. However, when they came to the Promised Land, they were afraid. They focused on the obstacle instead of who their God was and what He could do. Has that happened to you? Could you use a reminder today?

The Lord is omnipotent (all-powerful), omniscient (all-knowing), and omnipresent (always present everywhere). Today’s psalm illustrates each and gives reasons to be confident in God and give Him praise. He made the heavens and the earth. “He spoke and it came to be… and it stood firm” (v. 9). Look around you and see God in all creation. What power, what planning, what amazing precision!

“The counsel of the Lord stands forever, the plans of his heart to all generations” (vv.11, 15). He knows every person from generation to generation and the purposes He has for each one. You can learn the plans God has for you by seeking Him through His Word and through prayer. And then, “The eye of the Lord is on those who fear him” (v.18). You are never out of His presence for He is there to protect you, provide for you, and guide you.

You are His creation – one who is flawed by sin but who was made in His image. His steadfast love and His mercy will envelop you as you hope in Him. Remember the strength, the love, the comfort, the provision God has given you thus far. Be confident in the future He has for you. Then pray that you might be a light to those around you who need the uplifting presence of God.

Commit your work to the Lord,
and your plans will be established.
4 The Lord has made everything for its purpose,
even the wicked for the day of trouble.
5 Everyone who is arrogant in heart is an abomination to the Lord;
be assured, he will not go unpunished.
6 By steadfast love and faithfulness iniquity is atoned for,
and by the fear of the Lord one turns away from evil.
7 When a man’s ways please the Lord,
he makes even his enemies to be at peace with him.
8 Better is a little with righteousness
    than great revenues with injustice.
9 The heart of man plans his way,
but the Lord establishes his steps.

20 Whoever gives thought to the word will discover good,
and blessed is he who trusts in the Lord.
