Today, President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden are traveling to Uvalde, Texas, to console the survivors and the families of the victims of the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School this past week.
The 18-year-old shooter had fired upon his grandmother, with whom he lived, prior to heading to the school with a rifle. The grandmother is hospitalized in stable condition.
The gunman shot at two workers from a nearby funeral home before entering the school and opening fire. Nineteen students and 2 teachers were killed in the attack. It took nearly an hour to end the siege due to the school being in lockdown status with the classroom doors locked. Law enforcement officers were eventually able to enter the barricaded classroom and the gunman was fatally shot.
