Goodness in Abundance

Oh, how abundant is your goodness, which you have stored up for those who fear you.  – Psalm 31:19

Pride is an insidious trait that robs one of true peace, strains fellowship with others, and obstructs closeness to God. It keeps you from asking for help when you need it or allowing the Lord to work in situations where His will is different than the path you have determined to follow. Those filled with pride are rarely thankful, for they may believe all that has come to them is of their own doing. Thanksgiving as an aspect of prayer is important to consider.

What has that to do with today’s verse? The apostle James reminds the believer that God is willing to provide. He writes, “You do not have, because you do not ask” (4:2). He is not advocating asking for sinful things or for gifts to satisfy worldly passions but pointing out that your heartfelt prayers have a purifying influence on your desires.

See now that the psalmist says that God has stored up His goodness for those who fear Him; it is goodness in abundance. It has been said that when you get to heaven there will be storehouses full of the things God had ready to give you if you had only asked. Pray that you would know His desires for you, both physical and spiritual, and do not hesitate to ask.

In this self-focused world, plead for the hearts of America’s leaders, as well as leaders of other nations, to turn from themselves to the One who can establish peace. Lift your voices in thanksgiving for the abundance God has supplied to you and this nation. Seek His desires in all you do.

Today’s Verse: Psalm 31:19

Oh, how abundant is your goodness,
    which you have stored up for those who fear you
and worked for those who take refuge in you,
    in the sight of the children of mankind!

In you, O Lord, do I take refuge;
    let me never be put to shame;
    in your righteousness deliver me!
2 Incline your ear to me;
    rescue me speedily!
Be a rock of refuge for me,
    a strong fortress to save me!

Oh, how abundant is your goodness,
    which you have stored up for those who fear you
and worked for those who take refuge in you,
    in the sight of the children of mankind!

Blessed be the Lord,
    for he has wondrously shown his steadfast love to me
    when I was in a besieged city.
22 I had said in my alarm,
    “I am cut off from your sight.”
But you heard the voice of my pleas for mercy
    when I cried to you for help.

23 Love the Lord, all you his saints!
    The Lord preserves the faithful
    but abundantly repays the one who acts in pride.
24 Be strong, and let your heart take courage,
    all you who wait for the Lord!
