He urged an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine.
On Friday, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin spoke with his Russian counterpart, the first such conversation between the two officials since the Kremlin’s attack on Ukraine began in February.
Secretary Austin spoke with Russian Minister of Defense Sergey Shoygu by phone for about an hour. According to the Defense Department, the defense secretary “urged an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine and emphasized the importance of maintaining lines of communication.”
Secretary Austin continues to have concerns about what’s going on in Ukraine and the phone call didn’t specifically solve any acute issues or lead to a direct change in what the Russians are doing and what they’re saying, a Pentagon spokesperson said.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For Secretary Austin to seek God’s direction as he interacts with foreign defense officials.
- For wisdom for the defense secretary and allies as they seek to end the war between Ukraine and Russia.
- For Pentagon officials as they evaluate the ongoing conflict and advise the president.
