Celebrates Mother’s Day with Ukrainian First Lady.
During her visit to Slovakia, First Lady Jill Biden made an unannounced trip to Ukraine to visit with the Ukrainian First Lady Olena Zelenska on Mother’s Day. The U.S. first lady drove across the border to the town of Uzhorod, where she met with Ms. Zelenska for two hours.
The trip was cloaked in secrecy, with Mrs. Biden becoming the highest-profile American to enter Ukraine in its 10-week conflict with Russia. The Ukrainian first lady and her children have been hiding in an undisclosed location since Russia’s war on Ukraine began.
“I wanted to come on Mother’s Day,” she told Ms. Zelenska. “I thought it was important to show the Ukrainian people that this war has to stop and this war has been brutal, and that the people of the United States stand with the people of Ukraine.”
The Ukrainian first lady thanked Mrs. Biden for her “courageous act” and said, “We understand what it takes for the U.S. first lady to come here during a war when military actions are taking place everyday, where the air sirens are happening every day—even today.”
The American first lady made a four-day visit to Eastern Europe to highlight American support for Ukrainian refugees and for the allied nations such as Romania and Slovakia that are providing a safe haven for them. She also visited with U.S. troops.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For safety for First Lady Jill Biden as she returns to the United States.
- For discernment for the president and international allies as they determine how to best provide aid to Ukraine
- For the Lord to bring about a peaceful end to the war in Ukraine.
