The company auctioned off service members’ vehicles without court orders.
The Justice Department has filed a lawsuit against Steve’s Towing Inc. in Virginia Beach, Virginia, alleging that the company violated the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA), which protects the financing and housing of members of the military. The Justice Department alleges the company seized the vehicles of a Navy Seal member on deployment overseas, auctioning off the cars without the appropriate court order to do so.
“The flagrant disregard of a law designed to protect the rights of those in military service will not be tolerated,” said Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division. “The Department of Justice is taking action to ensure that all servicemembers harmed by unscrupulous actions receive just compensation.”
