Title 42, a policy enacted in March 2020 as a response to the pandemic, allows border officers to swiftly turn away migrants on public health grounds. Over the last two years, hundreds of thousands have been turned away, although many have also been allowed entry. With the lifting of that measure, a surge of immigrants is expected at the U.S.-Mexico border. The Department of Homeland Security estimates as many as 18,000 migrants per day may make their way to the southern border seeking entry into the United States. That could mean 540,000 in a single month.
A group of senators has warned about what could happen based on the change that has already occurred. “Look at these numbers, folks. These are with Title 42 in place,” said Senator Rob Portman of Ohio.
The senators claim that these days, every state is a border state. They also cautioned about the amount of drugs coming across the border, and how America is seeing more overdoses and more deaths month after month. They stated President Biden’s administration is responsible for three decisions: halting the construction of the wall, reinstating the failed policy of catch and release, and ending the successful Remain in Mexico policy.
Even before the coming surge, “there’s a 1.5 million backlog for dealing with asylum claims,” Senator Portman said. “This means that when you’re allowed into this country to await an immigration judge looking at your case, there will be anywhere from four to six years before your case is considered.”
