Today, President Joe Biden will host St. Patrick’s Day events at the White House and is scheduled to meet with Ireland’s Taoiseach Micheál Martin. According to White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki, “The leaders will reaffirm the close and historic partnership between the United States and Ireland and the extraordinary bonds between our people.” The two heads of state are expected to discuss COVID-19 response, trade, climate change, and their joint effort to respond to Russia’s aggression in Ukraine.
Late Wednesday evening, Taoiseach Martin tested positive for COVID-19. This is likely to impact the format of the meetings and White House officials are working to adjust their schedule accordingly. Press Secretary Psaki added, “We are still taking steps and precautions here in the White House, including regular testing, this is certainly a step that we welcome being able to invite our friends in to celebrate on Thursday.”
