Secretary Blinken posits chemical weapons use as more likely than nuclear.
Secretary Blinken was asked in an interview on Tuesday how concerned President Biden’s administration is about the possibility of nuclear warfare. Recently, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared a higher alert level for Russia’s nuclear arsenal. Secretary Blinken and other global leaders doubt the validity of a nuclear threat but are aware of Russia’s use of chemical weapons in the past.
While the secretary of state indicated it could just be bluster on the part of Russia, he stated, “We have real concerns that Russia could use a chemical weapon, another weapon of mass destruction.” Secretary Blinken added, “Unfortunately, we’ve seen them use or acquiesce to its use before in Syria, with Syria using these weapons, using them itself, trying to assassinate its opponents, including in the United Kingdom. So, this is something we are very focused on.”
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For the president and his advisors as they prepare to respond to possible escalations by Russia.
- For Secretary Blinken as he assesses the potential threats from foreign adversaries.
- For U.S. intelligence officials as they gather information and pass it on to politicians for action.
