Righteousness and Consequences

Let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe. – Hebrews 12:28

God called Israel to be His people, separate from other nations, distinct in their worship, obedient to Him, and reverent of Him in all respects. While there are a few differences, the same is true for you today.

God set His law before Israel when they were camped at Mount Sinai. The command was given that nothing was to touch the mountain or “he shall be stoned or shot; whether beast or man, he shall not live” (Exodus 19:13). As the people gathered around, they trembled with fear and dreaded the thought of talking with God. The mountain was enveloped in a thick cloud; there was lightning and thunder, and even the mountain shook. Moses told them, “Do not fear, for God has come to test you, that the fear of him may be before you, that you may not sin” (Exodus 20:20). The law was given to Moses, and obedience or disobedience to it brought their respective consequences.

This same God is more approachable today. You can experience quietness, rest, and peace as a believer in the death and resurrection of Christ, the Savior. The holy God sees only the righteousness of Jesus that covers you because of your faith in Him. Thus, you can boldly approach this awesome Lord, for the gift He has given you can never be shaken or removed. Worship and adore Him in reverence and thanksgiving!

Pray for those in this nation who have not yet accepted Christ; He bore God’s judgment for all of the sins of humankind on the cross. The consequences of acceptance or rejection are tremendous. Pray that they find permanent peace in the promise of “a kingdom that cannot be shaken.”

20 For they could not endure the order that was given, “If even a beast touches the mountain, it shall be stoned.” 21 Indeed, so terrifying was the sight that Moses said, “I tremble with fear.” 22 But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering, 23 and to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, 24 and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.

25 See that you do not refuse him who is speaking. For if they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, much less will we escape if we reject him who warns from heaven. 26 At that time his voice shook the earth, but now he has promised, “Yet once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens.” 27 This phrase, “Yet once more,” indicates the removal of things that are shaken—that is, things that have been made—in order that the things that cannot be shaken may remain. 28 Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe,
