Months of stalling to address Russia may result in consequences.
The United States has been urging India to take a stronger position against Russia’s aggression towards Ukraine, but India’s heavy reliance on Russian military equipment has made them reticent to do so. Donald Lu, the Assistant Secretary of State for South Asian affairs, spoke at a legislative hearing this past week, conveying the ongoing considerations of President Biden’s administration regarding how best to handle India’s split alliance.
“It’s a question we’re looking at very closely, as the administration is looking at the broader question over whether to apply sanctions under CAATSA (The Countering American Adversaries Through Sanctions Act) or to waive those sanctions,” Assistant Secretary Lu said. He also mentioned that the Indian public is currently outraged that an Indian citizen was killed in recent Russian attacks, which may also push the Indian government to take a more decisive stance.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For the president and his administration as they consider consequences for India’s divided alliance.
- For U.S. ambassadors as they represent the nation to various allied and hostile countries.
- For wisdom for the president and his advisors as they deliberate responses to aggressive actions by foreign leaders.
