The Worth of the Word

A fool takes no pleasure in understanding, but only in expressing his opinion.  –  Proverbs 18:2

It is said that when Sir Isaac Newton determined to pursue scientific truth, he separated himself to have only the desire “to know,” without the remotest desire or expectation of any fame. If this is true of every lover of intellectual/secular wisdom, it should most certainly be so for the one who seeks spiritual wisdom. One commentator stated it simply regarding the one seeking spiritual wisdom: “He is impelled to the search simply by a desire which is born of his appreciation of its worth – by a knowledge of its power to bless his life.”

Proverbs constantly compare the wise man against the fool. The latter has no heart for learning and, as today’s verse states, he only wishes to express his own opinion but has little understanding. When the wise speaks, however, several characteristics become evident. The spiritually wise person has a depth of wisdom that touches on principles of truth. Words flow from the heart with knowledge, understanding, and insight only God can give. Their words can soften and change hearts as the Lord works in those who listen.

Beloved, appreciate the worth of the Word of God. It holds all you need to live a life that is blessed by the God who loves you and wants you to know Him well. “Whoever gives thought to the word will discover good, and blessed is he who trusts in the Lord” (Proverbs 16:20). Study Scripture daily. Ask the Lord for understanding and wisdom, and focus on the One who guides you. Then pray for those governing this country to seek a relationship with God, so they obtain wisdom.

“Seek the Lord while he may be found;
    call upon him while he is near;
7 let the wicked forsake his way,
    and the unrighteous man his thoughts;
let him return to the Lord, that he may have compassion on him,
    and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

12 “For you shall go out in joy
    and be led forth in peace;
the mountains and the hills before you
    shall break forth into singing,
    and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.
13 Instead of the thorn shall come up the cypress;
    instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle;
and it shall make a name for the Lord,
    an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off.”
