President Joe Biden met with the National Security Council early Thursday morning to discuss the U.S. response. In addition, he met virtually with members of the G7 to discuss how global partners would work together in holding Russia accountable.
Global leaders denounced Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. World economic powers are considering additional sweeping sanctions. White House Secretary Psaki stated before the meeting today, “The G7 is 50 percent of the world’s economy and joined us — all of them — in this first tranche of sanctions.”
On Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a military operation in Ukraine. Russia has sent military forces into Ukraine and Ukraine reported attacks on its military infrastructure.
In previous days, Russia had claimed to be supporting two Ukrainian states that they claimed were independent and shelling had been occurring. This led President Biden to place sanctions on Russian financial institutions on Tuesday. He warned of stricter measures should Russia’s aggressions continue.
President Biden said on Wednesday, “The prayers of the entire world are with the people of Ukraine tonight as they suffer an unprovoked and unjustified attack by Russian military forces.” He added that “President Putin has chosen a premeditated war that will bring a catastrophic loss of life and human suffering.” As part of his official statement, the president continued, “Russia alone is responsible for the death and destruction this attack will bring, and the United States and its Allies and partners will respond in a united and decisive way. The world will hold Russia accountable.”
The president also called on the nation to pray, saying, “Jill and I are praying for the brave and proud people of Ukraine.”
The U.N. Security Council held an emergency meeting regarding Russia’s invasion.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For wisdom for President Biden, U.S. military advisors, and foreign heads of state as they determine their response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
- For president and leaders of Ukraine as they defend the country.
- For the people of Ukraine as they seek shelter from invasion.
