Number Your Days

Teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.  – Psalms 90:12

Have you ever been asked the question, “Where do you see yourself in five years?” It is such a natural human thing to plan life far out into the distant future, forgetting that the next day, or even hour, is not guaranteed for anyone. The Old Testament prophet Moses remembered this fact when he wrote Psalm 90.

As revealed in today’s verse, Moses recognized that human life is frail, especially in comparison to God’s power and judgment. He realized that having wisdom meant understanding that life on Earth is short and that no one knows how many days their life will last. Learning how to number your days grants wisdom that helps you to keep your heart focused on what truly matters—eternity with God.

The good news is that wisdom like this is something that can be learned. Moses’ prayer asked God to teach him wisdom, which means that it is not just something someone “has” or “doesn’t have.” As you pray today, use Moses’ words in Psalm 90 as a guide. Ask God to teach you how to number your days so that you can gain wisdom. Pray over the United States, that amidst a culture that tends to over-plan their lives, God would draw people’s hearts to Him. Ask Him to use the circumstances in the world to teach Americans how to better number their days, that they would gain new wisdom for their lives.

Today’s Verse: Psalm 90:12

So teach us to number our days
that we may get a heart of wisdom.

13 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit”— 14 yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. 15 Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” 16 As it is, you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil. 17 So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.
