Urges Russia to rely on diplomacy rather than war.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke during the UN Security Council meeting in New York City on Thursday, where discussions focused on how best to address Russia’s show of aggression on the border of Ukraine. Secretary Blinken called out misinformation that Russia has put out that causes uncertainty around the situation. He reminded the council of Russia’s commitment to nonviolence, overseen by the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).
“There are a series of commitments that Russia and Ukraine made under Minsk, with the OSCE and the Normandy Format partners involved as well,” said Secretary Blinken to the council. “If Russia is committed to diplomacy, we are presenting every opportunity for it to demonstrate that commitment,” he went on. “In the coming days, the world will remember that commitment – or the refusal to make it.”
