Part of compromise in Build Back Better negotiations.
First Lady Jill Biden confirmed on Monday that free community college was officially off the table in Build Back Better negotiations. She made the announcement at the 2022 Community College National Legislative Summit, which had hoped for $45.5 billion in funding for five years of two-year tuition for all their students.
The first lady said, “We knew that this wasn’t going to be easy. Joe always said that.” She expressed her disappointment, acknowledging, “Joe has also had to make compromises. Congress hasn’t passed the Build Back Better legislation — yet. And free community college is no longer a part of that package.”
