Curiosity

An intelligent heart acquires knowledge, and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge.  – Proverbs 18:15

Curiosity—is it a good thing? The adage “Curiosity killed the cat” implies that it is not. Perhaps you remember a children’s book series featuring Curious George. That little monkey got into all kinds of trouble due to his curiosity. Webster’s dictionary defines curiosity as “An eager desire to find out about things that are often none of one’s business.” However, curiosity can also be defined as “a desire to learn,” which today’s verse declares is a good thing.

The Message puts it this way: “Wise men and women are always learning, always listening for fresh insights.” Wise people have a desire to learn, whether you call it curiosity, inquisitiveness, or interest. In the positive sense of the word, how do you cultivate curiosity or a desire to learn? Lisa Link of Cornerstone University lists five steps. Determine what you really want to know. Set goals in line with your objectives. Learn from a multitude of mediums. Schedule in your learning. Keep company with passionate learners.

As you listen and learn in today’s society, where conflicting messages abound, be sure to examine sources. When following advice, prayerfully confirm that it matches up with the Bible. As you learn and grow, seek God’s wisdom and trust that He will give it to you (James 1:5-8). And as you pray, lift up the leaders of this nation, asking God to open their eyes and ears to godly wisdom, as they make decisions on behalf of the people of the United States.

7 “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. 9 Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? 11 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!
