Heavenly Taste

Teach me good judgment and knowledge, for I believe in your commandments.  – Psalm 119:66

Is it possible to teach someone how to have good judgment? Is there a connection between the knowledge someone has and their ability to exercise sound reasoning in a situation? Is good judgment simply something you either have or don’t have? 

Psalm 119 sheds some light on the connection between knowledge and judgment. In verse 66, the psalmist prays and asks God to teach him good judgment and knowledge. The Hebrew word “judgment” in this passage is literally translated as “taste,” referring not to the actual physical sense of taste, but instead as a metaphor, as something that helps influence a person’s decisions. For example, a person’s “taste” in style will affect how they dress or how they furnish their home. People’s tastes impact their ability to make sound decisions. This is what the psalmist is praying for in this verse. 

People can forget that good judgment and knowledge are things that are learned, and may not be the simple product of their heart or conscience. In a world where “trust your heart” and “follow your conscience” have become the guides to how to live, Christ calls His followers to be different. Those who follow Him are called to learn His ways so they gain wisdom that is in line with God’s purpose for the world. 

Take time today to ask God to give you wisdom like the psalmist. Pray the words of Psalm 119:66 and let Him lead you in the areas where your judgment needs growth. Pray over the United States, that governing officials would seek the Lord for sound knowledge and judgment, to lead with wisdom.
