Wake Check

Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, “Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.”  – John 7:38

Do you check your phone as soon as you wake up? Most people do, but here is another idea: how about checking your wake before you check your phone each morning? What could that mean? A wake is the trail left in the water or air created by the passage of a ship or aircraft. “Checking your wake” is another way of saying turn around and observe the results of your chosen words and actions. Ever notice how some folks are dogged by drama and hurt, while others appear unusually blessed with peace? What follows in your wake is what you have enabled by passing through life.

Jesus taught about “the Spirit” when He was on Earth. At that time, the Spirit of God did not interact with people in the same manner as today. Prior to Christ’s Advent, the companionship of the Spirit was more an external leading and prompting. But because of the great work of salvation accomplished by Jesus Christ, it is now possible for God’s Spirit to reside inside the heart of a believing saint. It is humbling to think your words could be Christ’s words to hurting people, and your actions God’s work accomplished on Earth! The deciding factor for what follows in your wake is how much of God’s Spirit you are willing to let flow into and out of your heart.

Pray for decision-makers in Washington to consider what kind of wake is being created behind their votes, policies, and positions on important issues. Ask that they would allow God’s Spirit to direct them in their choices.

45 The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

46 “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you? 47 Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: 48 he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. 49 But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.”
