Ben Cardin

U.S. Senator from Maryland

Benjamin Louis Cardin was born in October 1943 in Baltimore, Maryland. He earned an undergraduate degree from the University of Pittsburgh and received a Juris Doctor from the University of Maryland School of Law. He engaged in the private practice of law.

While still in law school, he was elected to the Maryland House of Delegates. He served there 20 years and was for a time the Speaker of the House—the youngest speaker in Maryland history at the time. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, holding that position for 20 years until his election to the United States Senate. He assumed office in January 2007.

Cardin is married to his high school sweetheart, Myrna Edelman. They have a daughter, and a son who is now deceased. He is Jewish.

In the News…

In a television interview, Senator Ben Cardin of Maryland said he sees hope for the Build Back Better mega bill to be resurrected this year, although there is a long way to go to get 50 votes needed for passage.

“There is unanimity in our caucus that we want to get a bill to the president, and we are working to see what that bill will contain. President Biden is directly involved in these negotiations,” the senator said.

“We are prepared to move; we just need to make sure we have unanimity in our caucus and that’s what we are working on and we will start on that next week when we return. … We want to see it as comprehensive as possible, but we need to make sure we have the votes to pass it, so that means it will be different than some of us would like to see.”

He said his party is open to potentially passing some parts of the bill as standalone items. “That’s a strategy decision that’s being negotiated. We are open to a way to reach the finish line.”
