Keep the Lights On

Let the redeemed of the Lord say so. – Psalm 107:2

From the 1300s and for nearly 600 years, from November to March each year the city of Rittenberg, Austria, was in the dark. The city was built behind a 3,000-foot mountain to protect it from marauders in search of plunder. Since the lack of winter sunshine was a small price to pay for safety, no one worried much about being in the dark. Times have changed, as they always do, and current residents say the lack of winter sun is one of the biggest drawbacks to living in that village, even with the power of electricity to keep the lights on.

As you look about, it appears that the entire world is living in darkness—not for the lack of the sun, but for lack of The Son. In John 8:12. Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” In John 9, Jesus again said, “I am the light of the world.” Now, The Savior has called you to be the light of the world (Matthew 5:14). In Ephesians 5:8, Paul wrote  “For at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light.”

Are you shining brightly for the Lord? Today’s verse says if you are redeemed, you need to speak up. You may not be a preacher or evangelist, but you have the eternal flame of glory within and let its glow permeate all you do.  It is your calling, until Jesus comes again, to be that light that proclaims that He is the Savior. Pray for many in government today who are struggling in the dark and don’t even realize it. Pray that there would be someone with the bright light of Christ to bring illumination to their souls and lead them to God’s redemption in their lives.

Today’s Verse: Psalm 107:2

Let the redeemed of the Lord say so,
    whom he has redeemed from trouble

9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

The people who walked in darkness
    have seen a great light;
those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness,
    on them has light shone.

For to us a child is born,
    to us a son is given;
and the government shall be upon his shoulder,
    and his name shall be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
    Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
7 Of the increase of his government and of peace
    there will be no end,
on the throne of David and over his kingdom,
    to establish it and to uphold it
with justice and with righteousness
    from this time forth and forevermore.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.
