In the News…
During a meeting of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Senator Ed Markey of Massachusetts said that Defense Department officials and industry executives are working “to just create artificial fear” of China’s growing nuclear arsenal.
“I always hate it when they make out the Chinese or the Russians to be 10 feet tall and we’re midgets,” he said. “It’s just the opposite. And I just think we have to keep that out there.”
The senator added, “The Pentagon should not be hyping the threat from hypersonics or goading us into an arms race. We just should not be trying—which I really feel the arms manufacturers are trying to do, and many in the Pentagon—to just create artificial fear in the United States. It’s not a Sputnik moment.”
He said he does not believe that China “likely intends to have at least 1,000 nuclear warheads by 2030,” but he downplayed the ramifications by touting existing U.S. capabilities.
“The Union of Concerned Scientists says that our ICBMs are 20 times the speed of sound,” Senator Markey stated. “I don’t think there’s any evidence thus far that the Chinese hypersonic weapons are going to be able to exceed what we can do in our country.”
