Calls for improvements to address climate change.
The Department of the Interior released a new report last week that analyzed the oil and gas leasing programs within the department. The report found that there were several key limitations to the processes around leasing and permitting. One of the key areas is to ensure local governments, including Tribal, and State governments, are included in the process and prevent land speculation.
Secretary Haaland stated of the report, “Our nation faces a profound climate crisis that is impacting every American. The Interior Department has an obligation to responsibly manage our public lands and waters – providing a fair return to the taxpayer and mitigating worsening climate impacts – while staying steadfast in the pursuit of environmental justice.”
