As the oral arguments begin, the final decision could reshape America’s abortion laws.
Today, the Supreme Court will begin hearing oral arguments in a case regarding a Mississippi law that could reshape the way the country’s legal system views abortion rights. The case, Dobbs, V. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, will determine if a Mississippi law that bans nearly all abortions after 15 weeks of gestation is constitutional.
The court is expected to review the law in light of prior rulings including Roe v. Wade (1973) and Planned Parenthood v. Casey (1992). The prior rulings of the Supreme Court have established the right to abortion before the baby is able to survive outside of the womb. This is the first time the Court has taken a case over a pre-viability abortion ban.
According to White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki, the administration will take part in the hearings and is working with Congress to address future abortion-related legislation. “The Department of Justice filed a brief in the case and will participate in the oral argument. And [President Biden] is committed to working with Congress to codify the constitutional right,” she added.
A ruling by the High Court is expected by June of 2022.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For the Justices of the Court to seek God’s will in their deliberation of the case.
- That God would empower the Supreme Court to protect the rights of the vulnerable.
- For greater justice to be brought about by the outcome of this case.
