Blessed Beyond Measure

Proclaiming thanksgiving aloud, and telling all your wondrous deeds. – Psalm 26:7

When Israel was led from Egypt by the powerful hand of God, they stood in awe of Him, and celebrated in song, recounting the steps by which He had triumphed gloriously (Exodus 14:30-15:21). At various times in Israel’s history, they took time to think back on God’s provision and protection and sang praise to Him for all His wondrous deeds. Later, Mary was given the news that she would be the mother of the Savior of the world, and though she would endure hardship in various ways, she sang praises to God, “My soul magnifies the Lord… for he who is mighty has done great things for me” (Luke 1:46-49).

You can do the same. Take some time to review your life. Look at the turning points, times of challenge, times of opportunity, examining the diverse directions available to you. Then recount how God led you into places of safety or prosperity, or guided you on a course you may not have chosen on your own, but have found that God has blessed you beyond measure on this path. Others of you may be in a period of difficulty, or loss and sadness, or financial instability. In those times, it is still right and prudent to give thanks to God who will strengthen you and give you peace (Philippians 4:13).

“Proclaiming thanksgiving aloud, and telling all [God’s] wondrous deeds” is appropriate every day, on all occasions. On this Thanksgiving Day, be sure to talk about all that the Lord has done in your life to bless you. Give thanks for this nation and all the blessings that come from living here. Praise God from whom all blessings flow!

1Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and all that is within me,
    bless his holy name!
2 Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and forget not all his benefits,
3 who forgives all your iniquity,
    who heals all your diseases,
4 who redeems your life from the pit,
who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy,
5 who satisfies you with good
so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

6 The Lord works righteousness
and justice for all who are oppressed.
7 He made known his ways to Moses,
his acts to the people of Israel.
8 The Lord is merciful and gracious,
slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
9 He will not always chide,
nor will he keep his anger forever.
10 He does not deal with us according to our sins,
nor repay us according to our iniquities.
11 For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
    so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him;
12 as far as the east is from the west,
so far does he remove our transgressions from us.
13 As a father shows compassion to his children,
so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him.

22 Bless the Lord, all his works,
in all places of his dominion.
Bless the Lord, O my soul!
