President Biden seeks to center Native Americans In stewardship of federal lands.
On Monday, President Biden hosted the White House Tribal Nations Summit. During his remarks, he introduced the Tribal Homelands Initiative, a new federal program designed to improve federal stewardship of the nation’s land, water, and wildlife by increasing the presence of Native Americans at the decision table. The Tribal Homelands Initiative is a joint mission of the Interior and Agriculture Departments.
Interior Secretary Deb Haaland stated of the initiative, “From growing crops and taming wildfires to managing drought and famine, our ancestors have spent millennia using nature-based approaches to coexist among our lands, waters, wildlife, and their habitats. As Tribal communities continue to face the effects of climate change, this knowledge – which has been passed down since time immemorial – will benefit the Department’s efforts to bolster community resilience and protect Indigenous communities.”
