God’s Righteous Judgment

I will give to the Lord the thanks due to his righteousness. – Psalm 7:17

Psalm 7 has been called “The Song of the Slandered Saint.” Not only was David being pursued by King Saul, but it seems that someone he considered a friend was speaking lies about him. Instead of getting angry and fighting back, David turned to the Lord and poured out his complaint to Him. Then, he left it there.

How could he do that? Because he knew that God is the righteous judge able to discern the thoughts and intents of the heart. God’s character and His nature as the just Judge and the almighty God – One who is continuously involved in the affairs of man – assured David that the Lord would take care of the situation. The wicked would not go unpunished. In fact, the position of the impenitent before God is always perilous.

Several observations should be noted: David proclaims, “My shield is with God, who saves the upright in heart” (Psalm 7:10). If you have had lies told about you (attacks against believers in Jesus Christ occur around the world), do not reply in anger or malice equal to the offenders. Remember that Jesus was accused but He gave no answer to a single charge (Matthew 27:14). Stand for right, but speak no ill.

Pray for those in government who need to get their hearts right with God. May they know that the Lord can be their shield. David’s confidence in God’s righteous judgment allowed him to “give to the Lord the thanks due” (v. 7). Let the love of Christ shown on the cross bring rejoicing to your heart. May you never cease to sing praise to Him for His goodness and righteous acts.

Today’s Verse: Psalm 7:17

and may you establish the righteous—
