Russian analyst charged with lying to the FBI.
Igor Danchenko, A Russian analyst who was a source for the 2016 dossier of allegations about former President Donald Trump was arrested and indicted Thursday for allegedly lying to the FBI. The arrest is part of Special Counsel John Durham’s probe into the origins of the FBI’s Russia investigation which led to the collusion charges against President Trump and an impeachment action.
Danchenko was charged with five counts of making false statements to the FBI and faces up to five years in prison for each count.
Danchenko was a key source of information used by former British intelligence operative Christopher Steele in a dossier that alleged President Trump was compromised by ties to Russia ahead of the 2016 election. The dossier (many of its claims were never proven) became one of the most controversial parts of the investigation known as “Crossfire Hurricane.”
The indictment issued Thursday specifically faults the Russian for contributing information that became part of the FBI’s foreign intelligence surveillance warrants on Trump campaign aide Carter Page. President Trump has maintained from the beginning that the allegations in the dossier were false and fabricated to destroy his campaign, and later his presidency.
