Thousands of Afghans flee their homes.
As the U.S. continues to withdraw its troops from Afghanistan, violence by the Taliban has increased. Thousands of Afghans have fled their homes as the Taliban battles government forces in a fight for territory and power. The Islamic group stepped up its attacks after the U.S. and coalition partners announced they would pull out their forces by September 11. Concerns have been raised over border security issues, including the safety of Western troops who remain.
Pentagon spokesman John Kirby stated that Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin aims to protect the troops while they prepare to leave Afghanistan. “The secretary is committed to a safe and orderly, responsible drawdown, and we have made it exceedingly clear that protecting our forces and the forces of our allies and partners as they withdraw is a main priority,” Kirby said. “The first word out of our mouths is safe. A safe withdrawal. And the secretary has approved some additional assets in the region to help us ensure that protection.”
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For wisdom for U.S. military leadership as the troop draw down continues.
- For the safety of American and coalition troops as they prepare for their eventual withdrawal from Afghanistan.
- That U.S. diplomats and other officials would handle the situation with discernment..
- For peace in the Middle East and for the Afghan people.
