In him my heart trusts, and I am helped. – Psalm 28:7
In the few verses of Psalm 28, David describes God as his rock, his strength, his shield, the saving refuge, the strength of His people, and their shepherd who will carry them forever. Moses had constantly reminded Israel that the Lord alone is God (Deuteronomy 4:32-40). In addition to his own experience, David’s confidence was based on God’s historic acts for His people. Israel’s existence was not dependent on its own military might or the physical strength of individuals, but it rested securely on the active power of God working for and through His people.
If you ever needed encouragement, understand that, if you are a believer in Jesus Christ, this is your God! Charles Spurgeon called Psalm 28 “a song in the night.” David’s experiences, his griefs, made him eloquent in describing the God He loved, the God he served, and the God who sustained him through all kinds of circumstances. This God can infuse you with the strength you need to meet the trials of the day with confidence, the resistance to overcome temptation, and the faith you need to stand firm. Only trust Him and you will be helped.
Israel knew many defeats when they failed to trust in the Lord. But when they turned to God, when they trusted in and relied on Him, when they recognized that God was their strength and song, they had victory. It will be the same for you. Then, as you think of this country, pray that those who doubt God will turn from their unbelief to a saving faith in the Lord. May their hearts be changed, filled with joy, confident in His goodness, and dependent wholly on Him.
Today’s Verse: Psalm 28:7
The Lord is my strength and my shield;
in him my heart trusts, and I am helped;
my heart exults,
and with my song I give thanks to him.

To you, O Lord, I call;
my rock, be not deaf to me,
lest, if you be silent to me,
I become like those who go down to the pit.
2 Hear the voice of my pleas for mercy,
when I cry to you for help,
when I lift up my hands
toward your most holy sanctuary.
6 Blessed be the Lord!
For he has heard the voice of my pleas for mercy.
7 The Lord is my strength and my shield;
in him my heart trusts, and I am helped;
my heart exults,
and with my song I give thanks to him.
8 The Lord is the strength of his people;
he is the saving refuge of his anointed.
9 Oh, save your people and bless your heritage!
Be their shepherd and carry them forever.
