Deputy Director, Federal Bureau of Investigation
Paul M. Abbate began his career with the Federal Bureau of Investigation in 1996 as a special agent assigned to the New York Field Office, where he worked in the Criminal Division and served as a member of the SWAT Team.
Across his years with the FBI, he has been a special agent in the Iraq Unit of the Counterterrorism Division, where he deployed to Iraq. Later, he deployed to Afghanistan where he served as FBI deputy on-scene commander as part of the Newark Division’s Joint Terrorism Task Force. He served the Counterterrorism Division at the headquarters and was also dispatched to the Los Angeles field office, again in charge of counter-terrorism matters.
He has served in the Washington Field Office and as the FBI’s on-scene counterterrorism commander in Libya.
Abbate was then assigned as the executive assistant director for the Criminal, Cyber, Response and Services Branch of the FBI out of the Washington Field Office. He was named associate deputy director of the FBI in February 2018.

A year-end report from the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center acknowledged a record number of complaints from Americans about cybercrime.
Federal Bureau of Investigation Deputy Director Paul Abbate said the agency received “a record number of complaints from the American public in 2020: 791,790 which reported losses exceeding $4.1 billion.” This quantity represents a 69 percent increase from 2019 when more than 300,000 more complaints were made.
The top three complaints received were phishing scams, non-payment and non-delivery scams, and extortion, totaling a loss of nearly $4.2 billion.
“Fraudsters took the opportunity to exploit the pandemic to target both businesses and individuals,” the report said.
