Number now below 50,000, tracking group says.
Hospitalizations related to the coronavirus are at their lowest level since early November of last year. Positive cases continue to decline in much of the nation.
As of Sunday, the U.S. reported 47,352 hospitalized virus patients, according to data from The COVID Tracking Project. Also on Sunday, 1,049 deaths were tabulated, the smallest number since January 18 this year.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky cautioned that more contagious variants of the coronavirus could change the current declining trend of cases.
